A !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! drops a load of fire retardant in an effort to halt the progress of wildfires raging in California. The DC-10 is following a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that is flying ahead to direct the tanker over the spot where firefighters on the ground have called for the drop. The DC-10 can carry up to 12,000 gallons of water or retardant in an external tank which can be released in 8 seconds.

Ugh, the VLAT. Good for pictures, bad for actually fighting fire efficiently. I’ll take a couple of SEATs or the Super Scoopers over that beast any day.

Back in 2011, when fires destroyed over 34,000 acres of Bastrop County near Austin, the DC-10 was deployed to KAUS but was never used on the fire.

I’ve seen a bunch of tankers flying every direction, mostly towards the Big Sur/Soberanes and Nacimiento/Chimney fires nearby, but they’re everywhere in the skies. ‘Tis the season.

Sadly, ‘tis. This is the fire that some scumbag set on purpose, I believe. Maybe they should load him in the hopper with the retardant and drop him on the fire.

I was actually on the Bastrop Complex that summer. If I remember right, that’s when the whole VLAT concept was super new. Plus there were still a fair number of P2V Neptunes flying around (still are, but those are getting more rare). I think the reason they didn’t use it in Texas that summer was because they didn’t think it could get good canopy penetration or coverage with how fast and high it has to fly. That’s why I think they are kinda useless. Fine in grass, maybe, but any kind of dense brush or forest makes them just cool looking toys.

I live in Austin, and we drove through Bastrop on Hwy 71 last year for the first time. Looking at the burned out trees, it took me a second to realize what I was looking at. It looked like No Man’s Land in WWI. We could see the smoke from Austin, and breathed it when the wind was right (or wrong, I suppose). That was a crazy time, and a lot of people were on edge. We had “go boxes” packed just in case, though I don’t think we were really in much danger in north Austin. But it never hurts to be prepared. And this week, we’ve had 12 inches of rain. Unfortunately, I fear that these sorts of things are just going to become more common.

Neat! Love me some Neptunes. Those BAe’s are pretty neat too. It’s always been a favorite of mine. Thanks for this link.

So look what I saw on the way home:
Heading south, likely to the new fire east of Santa Barbara. So much going on here, it’s nuts.
